The KIDCS Mathematics competition combines individual speed rounds with collaborative team problem-solving. Students face mental arithmetic challenges, multi-step algebra and geometry problems, and real-world applied mathematics — all under competition time pressure.
The competition runs across two modes: individual performance rounds, where each competitor works alone against the clock, and a team relay, where school teams of three solve connected problems in sequence.
Problems are projected on the venue screen and broadcast feed during the Grand Final, making the Mathematics competition one of the most audience-engaging events at the Championship. The KIDCS scoring platform processes results in real time and displays live rankings after each round.
Topics Covered
Problems are drawn from four mathematics domains, aligned to the Tanzanian secondary school curriculum and international competition standards.
Mental Arithmetic
Fast-recall addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division including fractions and percentages.
Algebra
Equations, inequalities, quadratics, sequences, and algebraic reasoning.
Geometry
Area, perimeter, angles, coordinate geometry, and basic trigonometry.
Applied Problems
Real-world mathematics including rates, ratios, statistics, and financial literacy.
Round Structure
Stage 1
Individual
Individual Speed Round
Each competitor works through a timed set of mental arithmetic and algebra problems. Answers are submitted on paper or digitally. Speed and accuracy are both scored — correct answers in the shortest time earn the highest points.
Stage 2
Individual
Problem-Solving Round
A longer-format round with multi-step problems covering algebra, geometry, and applied mathematics. Partial credit is awarded for correct methodology even when the final answer is wrong.
Stage 3
Team
Team Relay
Teams of three work through a relay of connected problems — the answer to one feeds into the next. Communication, accuracy, and time management are all tested as the clock runs.
Stage 4
Individual
Grand Final
Top scorers across all rounds face a championship problem set combining arithmetic, geometry, and proof. Problems are projected on screen for the audience and broadcast panel.
